This is the start of my wallpaper for Kitsune Noir which will go live in July 09. The project itself is an amazing oppurtunity for the indivduals and also the collective, it will be seen by a huge audience on the website.

I am still unsure of what i am going to do for this project but this is my initial workings, i have had lots of ideas but with time constraigns i am unsure weather i will be able to get them done. I would like to photograph alot of art and design equipment with the negitive space being the words Kitsune Noir but i am unsure how i will get all of the equipment and also weather it will look as good as i envasage it.

I have another idea of representing all of the files on your desktop with certain textures patterens and then label them so that you can store the different files on your desktop underneath each header. Like a map or a sorting platform for the files.

The picture above shows the image cards that will fit inside the folded envelope/CV. The beauty of this is that I can add or take away any old images, and replace them with new ones with minimal effort. This part will be printed on slightly heavier stock than the envelope part.

Upon printing what I thought was the finished article as a draft I discovered that the smiley face idea didnt look too great. I have decided to keep the folded outer cover quite simple with my name on the front and contents with a diagram on the back (pictured above). A classic contemporary look!

I wanted to re write my existing CV and add any addition skills or information acquired over the past year. I also wanted to inter great my portfolio into it aswell. I have decided to create an A4 card which folds in half and contains some small postcard size images of my work. The A4 card itself will be printed front, back and folded in half - On the front will be the cover image from my website (smiley face) and a title. Inside will be my CV and on the back contact information and logo. I am trying to keep the cost down on this part making it 2 colour. The cards that will be placed inside will be full colour examples of my work.

New Business Cards

To tie in with my website I have decided to create new business cards. These will be made and printed by me. First I will use heavy cardboard usually used to mount work - I will then silk screen print the smiley face design that I have used for my website onto to this card, fitting as many as possible on to one sheet - These will then be cut into business card size - On the reverse will be where I apply a small sticker with my contact information on it.

I have had a bit of freelance work with a company called Drinksafe-systems recently, this involved the production of an instructions leaflet and various info graphics for products produced by them.

Pictures were taken of the Travel Tap bottle and I have shown it on my portfolio website as a live project. This work will also go down on my CV. The image above shows the 4 products I had to work on.

I wanted to update my withered clothing online shop to tie in with my newer work and also to open it up to to other projects that I intend to do in the future which doesn't necessarily fall into the clothing category (prints, badges, tea towels etc)

With this in mind I decided to change the shop from the withered clothing online shop to the withered design online shop. I then created changed the colour scheme for the shop to the navy blue of my website.

To join the 2 I then created an illustration (pictured above) which would act as a shop advert, this was added to a shop page created on indexhibit then linked using html.

After the second proposal we had a chat to the gallery organiser at KK Outlet and she suggested we just think about the concept and not worry too much about visuals yet. We had the idea to focus the concept around the fact that we will all be leaving university. The title 'Work For Nothing' came up and the idea was to have different toungue in cheek refrences to working imaginary briefs for nothing for 3 years at university then going out into the real world to find work which we actually get paid for.

After sending the idea through they really liked it but suggested we base the concept around the current recession and think about turning the gallery space into a job centre. After more discussion the concept was sealed and we agreed on KKareer Centre.

We had concepted this idea of having the mural painted directly onto the wall, we felt this would be a good promotional image that could be used for the show flyer. KK liked the idea and it has been included in the press release. Great EXPOSURE!!

We needed to come up with some promotional images to send to the people at KK outlet so that they could mock up invites and advertisments of our forth commming show at KK outlet.

With these images we wanted to display the frustration of leaving uni with out job prospects, because of the social and political problems with ressesion at the moment.

We thought about a few ideas, this one was a reaction to what happened when we went to the job center and the only place to get personal information about jobs was a small booth in the corner of the room, and it was closed when we went in there. Unfortunatly we couldnt get a picture in the job center of the position closed booth so we decided to recreate one using paints, cardboard, opaque film and a shelfing unit.

And had a person sitting down looking depressed with a portfolio as if they were trying to get work in the creative industry to show the emotions that go through the minds of student nowerdays when they leave universtiy.

This is an image after my second day in the shop. I really like how it is going. I think the colours work well with the products sold in the vintage shop. I think my piece also works well arround the paintings of the woman figures. I havent yet finnished the mural but when I do I will take some better pictures and I think it will be a really nice strong piece for my protfolio.

This is a close up after day 1 of being in the shop. I started by creating a background of triangles and then a prism outlines ontop. This picture shows my first prism outline. i stupidly didnt use a ruler, but redeemed the piece by making the lines thinker using a ruler and a thicker pen.

Project 15 was sent out today (8th May).

Project 15 involved 15 tubes, 15 different art institutions around the UK and 45 posters. Each tube contained 3 posters individually designed and printed by Simon Zinn, William Hibberd and Mark Grant, 1 covering letter, 12 poster pins, 1 pencil and a set of tear off tags which would help promote our website (www.justusdesigncollective.com).

KK Proposal 2

After we were given quite a bit of criticism over our first concept we were also given some constructive advice on what to look at and where to take our ideas. We thought further about why they chose our concept and we believe it was because we are a multi disciplinary group studying all over the UK and not just in one place.

This idea developed into something that involved a collaboration between all exhibitors and we thought it would be a good idea to put on an exhibition that would showcase a series of these collaborations all created by members of just us.

However strong or weak the idea was I feel that we felt slightly pressured in coming up with a 'life changing' concept and rushed into this one a bit. This showed in the final proposal and they didnt like it. We were told to think of something else and suggested we think about our own interests / beliefs and try and come up with a concept that puts them across.

Faux Couture Promotional Badges

The vintage shop Faux Couture also asked me if i could create some badges for them, as promotional items to be given out at a club in the week. They wanted a 70's vibe from the badges, and gave me a few ideas of what they were looking from pictures of old retro household items. They were really happy with the end product and said theat the badges gave them quite alot of business for the week after they were given out. I am currently working on some more promotional items for the shop including flyers, t shirt designs and more badges.

I was asked to do a wall mural for a vintage shop in plymouth called Faux Couture, they wanted me to create something quite abstract to work arround two female figures. This is my initial ideas, i wanted to create something which showed off my style, which had a main pattern and then had more technical drawings ontop. I liked the idea of creating a background of Triangles and then technical prism drawings ontop.

KK Proposal 1

We decided to enter The KK Outlet 'Best In Show' brief which involved creating an exhibition concept for the chance to be able to exhibit in Hoxton Square, London for the whole month of July.

Our concept involved the idea that Just Us Design Collective was about students showcasing work from all over the country and travelling from their place of study to London to exhibit for the event. The exhibition would be titled 1260.4 which is the total distance; in miles, of every exhibitor travelling to London. Each member would then create a piece of work based on the unique distance they travelled.

The walls of the exhibition would reflect this and would look much like a tube map in that it would use colours and lines to link the work together. We also proposed the idea of having a collaboration mural at the end of the gallery space which each exhibitor would work on throughout the setting up period.

We did manage to secure the best in show competition but they werent too keen on the concept meaning we had to come up with a new one.

Our experience with KK has given us a real insight into collaboration and curating on a huge scale! We put in three lengthy proposals in total and have listened to ideas form KK which i feel have helped us to develop our ideas. The whole experience has been amazing and the show on July 2nd will be a huge challenge but worth it when we open on 2nd July a7 7

Kitsune Noir Desktop Wallpaper Project

We have also been talking to the very nice Bobby Solomon from the Los Angeles based design blog Kitsune Noir. As you may or may not know Kitsune Noir is a very successful design blog. Along side this blog Bobby also runs a project he calls the Desktop Wallpaper Project. Where many many talented designers and illustrators from all over the world have showcased their work through the medium of technology based wallpapers, for Iphones, PSP's and Computers.

Bobby has given us the opportunity of showcasing our wallpaper designs for the whole month of July. Just as long as at least 23 of us can commit to either creating him a design or using an old piece of work. This is such a good opportunity for everyone to be given some deserved exposure and also a chance to be showcased alongside some great designers and illustrators such as Cody Hoyt, Adrian Fleet, Andy Miller, and Laura Laine.

Here are the final images of project 15, and we were really happy with the pack in the end, i think if we had a slightly bigger budget we may have done things differently, however we feel it has given people a taster for how we work and our influences and styles.

Postal tube stickers

In relation to 'Project 15' I created these stickers to go on either end of the postal tubes. The dot sticker is a digital representation of our first project as a team and is seperated into 3 colours which we may use on our business cards. The other sticker is an image which gives instructions on what to do with the contents of the tubes. There is space on the top and bottom of this image for a date and edition number.

Before applying the instruction diagrams to the circle we tested the idea on a normal address label which would have been applied to the side of the postal tube. We felt that this didnt work so decided to put it on the circular sticker which would go on the pop lid of the tube.

This is my final illustration for the publication based on dreams called "lucidity". I created it 100% with felt tip marker pens on an a3 sheet of medium thickness paper. i was really plesed with the out come, and so was the curator the the publication who said that he really liked the image and thought it would go perfectly into his book.

We were asked by a third year university student from Salford University to create an images for a publication based on dreams called "lucidity". I looked through the interent to find quotes descibing and mentioning dreams and found one from Victor Hugo a French romantic Poet, Novelist and Dramatist, 1802-1885 “There is nothing like a dream to create the future.” For this image i really wanted to create something hand drawn and not use the computer at all when creating the image. I started by drawing out the quote. Then I surrounded it with dreamy shapes and dancing people to illustrate the quote further.

I added selected pieces of the work from my old website into the new format. However most of my new work had not yet been photographed so Simon and I decided to go into he small studio so that we could get some decent images. We did have problems with the studio being dirty and the lights not quite working as we planned.

I managed to get a handful of good photographs and updated my website with a few new pages.

Indexhibit has options on how you wish to display images when they have been uploaded. I wanted mine to slideshow through each image so the 'slideshow' option was an obvious choice. However the option to display the text under the image was hard to accomplish without changing some serious code. To avoid any unneeded stress in regards to learning code I decided to add the text under each image. This doesn't actually make any difference in the appearance to the website, just means I have to add it to each image and retype them individually.

The above image shows my Logo page in which I will display any logo work I have done. I have also created 5 sections on my website - Information, Print, Website & Animation and Installation & exhibition. Logo falls under Print.

I also added a links page and a contact page with various bits of information about my self and some links to some of my projects such as 'just us' and 'justanotherdesignblog'.

As well as a link to my old portfolio website I created an image of text language smiley face. I decided to use this as a feel it can represent my current mood in relation to creating a new website. This will also convey a positive mood. I am considering using this image for my new business cards and any stationary I may create for self promotion.

In order to change the colour, font of the text viewed on my website I had to change the CSS file for the website. This was done then uploaded onto my server. Text colour navy blue - Links grey - Background colour white.

A constant form of boosting our exposure is to contact design blogs, they will give us the exposure we need and will help divert the traffic we need to help us network. Sometimes we follow up with more than one email to try and jog peoples memory. we have seen form our stats that the site has been hugley boosted by bieng showcased on certian blogs.

I have added my logo to the website so that it appears in the top left hand side of the window directly above the navigation. This had to be done by saving the file as a .gif then uploading it to my server, I then had to add html on my website so that the image could be displayed in this way.

I also added some of my pages but selected them as publish > OFF. This enables me to see which pages I need to create. I will continue to finish it at a further date but in the meantime a link to my old website has been created and "new website coming soon" displayed in the main window.

I decided; after alot of consideration, that I would print my posters in a variety of 5 different colours. I found that the pearlescent ink took to the paper the best so went with that.

After working on my images for my website [which has taken months to get right] I have decided to learn a new program and use this platform for my website. I have decided to use a program called indexibit. The site is run by D.Eatock and M.Varska I feel this platform lets me edit my website easily without the use of a ftp but also edit the site in dreamweaver with my ftp. At present i am not entirly happy with it however i plan to change the art direction on it within the next few weeks nad before we go live with our shows.

I am aiming for the summer show to have a range of silk screen prints avaialble to take away, this is one of my inital ideas, printed in a marine blue ink. They will all be A4 in size as i feel this is a managable size for people to be able to take away with them.

This was a A2 b/w print that was part of a pack called project 15, this was sent to 15 universities across the UK we all produced a print that gave off a flavour of our style. My poster was based on a code theory and tried to get the viewer to interact with the piece. You can see more images for the pack on our flickr

Newsletter 1

We have decided to create a newsletter which will inform our current members of any recent news. This has been created using html and sent through a mailing list provider. Making the newsletter html means that we can design it to look like a real newsletter and display images without making them email attachments.

We decided to set up a Twitter account making it easier for people to see what we as a collective are upto. This will link to our main site.

'Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?'

Simon - Twitter has helped us network and talk to fellow creatives about the project. I feel going into 2010 it will be a great marketing tool for us.

I have decided to re create my personal logo in order to differentiate my new site from the old one. I wanted to keep the same idea (speach bubble) but change it slightly and make it less "messy" looking to show a development in my style.

I experimented with various drawings but decided to use a vector which was then printed and traced. The choice of Baskerville typeface was considered carefully as it is a transitional font positioned between the old style typefaces and the modern styles. This fitted perfectly with my new website as I see it as a transition between old and new.

An idea for our business cards involves us creating 3 different business cards that when brought together create a full image. The intention is to print 3 different cards; each with a unique colour onto frosted transparent card. When each one is overlayed onto the other the full image shows the just us logo.

The Front Room

We are now friends with the front room in cambridge which is an ever changing creative space that welcomes inspiring & challenging works. We have added them to our links and they have added us to their links!

Simon - The front room have said that if we wanted to run an exhibtion in their space they would be more than happy to help us. This could be a fantastic venue in 2010 for the collective.

After alot of trials with colour combinations and registration techniques this was my final poster design. I used gold peralesent ink for the background colour of my image which was really nice and shinny although it dosent show so much in this picture. I didnt end up using a different colour because i thought that this was alot more successful. I was really please with my final poster. I used quite heavy 250gsm stock, and printed 20 of which the best 15 were used.

I took a step back with this idea and tried printing the design as a one colour print. The white on black is my favourite so far and really helps the pattern stand out. The print on the left has been printed using pearlescent ink. This is a strong outcome but I fell that it may not work for this design as the image needs to be bold in order to stand out.

I had a few ideas on what i wanted my poster to look like, colour wise. I had some inspiration from an album cover that i had just recently brought which had a really nice green mixed with a gold background. I tried this out on the computer along with a few other colour combinations, printed them out and took them with me to the screen printing room.

Now all I had to do was to create the text for the bottom of the poster. We had all agreed on the text we were going to use. I wasnt sure if this should be hand drawn to keep in company with the rest of the poster or weather it should be 100% ledgible. I tried making the text garamond which is our just us font and found that it look a little to generic, so i printed out the text and traced it with a penicl on the light box joining up all the letters when i scanned this hand rendered version to the computer and added it to my poster design I thought it looked alot better that computer type. I then realsied that the only thing on my poster which was computer generated was the circle, so I decided to draw a circle and scan it in. I really liked this. and thought that after I decided which colour I would use for screen printing the design was complete.

One of the recent additions to the collective is taking part in an exhibition In london, he has personally invited us to the private viewing of the show.

We recieved our invites today from Tim George for an exhibition he will be taking part in on 3rd of April, it will be a great opportunity for us to network and also talk to possible venues for our planned exhibition at the end of the year.

I have decided to use Indexhibit to publish my website as this would be the most beneficial way for me to finish my portfolio at a high standard in a small time frame.

Indexhibit is 'A web application used to build and maintain an archetypal, invisible website format that combines text, image, movie and sound', created by Daniel Eatock and Jeffery Vaska.

After downloading the program onto my computer and uploading it onto my server all I had to do was install it by entering my 'MYSQL Database' information and login. I was then able to upload images of my work.

In order to customize my website though I have to make small changes to the CSS.

Simon suggested writing a short sentence saying who designed the poster and that it is part of a collection of posters designed by us on a Limited edition basis. This was an interesting thing to have on the poster because it shows the unique element of each one. Will and I had a chat about it and Will suggested that we could design something that would be the same for each poster and could act as a stamp or something that could be applied easily and would make it look authentic, I suggested having an area where you could write the edition number on each print.

Each layer has been traced onto seperate sheets of A3, I will then scan this and produce a vector of the image so that it can be re sized for printing on A2 paper. This will then be printed onto transparency film so that it can be applied to a silk screen. Each number represents the different colours. Layer 3 being the final layer and the darkest; maybe black or navy.

Once I had all the drawings in place I needed to get the image ready for screen printing. I didnt want the inside of the drawings to be the same colour as the background, so I had to highlight all of the areas ouside of the drawings and make a new layer for them. Now i had both the drawn layer and the background layer ready fro screen printing.

After scanning the image I have traced it using the pen tool in illustrator. I have also created new shapes in order to fill the white space. In order to keep the image symmetrical I have only finished one half of the image then mirrored it on the other side.

The next process will involve printing it onto A3 paper and tracing it by hand.

I started to place the drawing into the circle again. This time i started in the middle of the image and worked out wards, i used drawings that had similar angles together and didnt adjust the sizes of drawings but just adjusted the angle that they were placed. This helped me fit all of the drawings together and it filled a cicle a little easier.

We have come up with an idea to help promote the collective to a wider audience and to target our market: Students. The idea is to create a pack of 3 posters (One designed by each of us) and send them out to 15 different art institutions across the UK.

I have been looking at alot of work by Shepard Fairey recently and wish to d=create something using some of the techniques he uses towards his work. I like the patterns and symmetry he uses in some of his designs and wish to develop some of my own

The image above shows a picture in which I have sketched a pattern by hand and scanned it in. The shapes and images are inspired by the works of Shepard Fairey. This image will be traced using Illustrator.

When i started to place all of the drawings into the circle i found it very difficult, making sure that they fitted all together and looked in proportion to each other. I started to adjust the size of the drawings so that small ones could fit into small gaps and large ones wouldnt look to prominent. but this had its problems, all of the lines were now changing diameter and started to look a bit silly, as if i had drawn some with a very large pen and some with a very thin one. I decided to start again.

Throughout my sketch book, I have pages like this. i really like this page so i thought id scan it in and show it as part of my final pieces, this came from a lyric in a song, as does most of my inspiration. I think this piece shows against artwork which i created last year how my style has grown and slightly changed direction.

I also added the visulas to a large rectangular billboard to show how it could be used in this sort of situation. I was quite pleased with my final D & AD outcomes i thought they were different from the competition but also ran inside the same themes that Pj smoothies had prieviously used, just with a bit more flare from the hand rendered techniques. I really liked the mountains of fruit shown on all the images and believed that this gave the smoothies a healthy look, as well as the slogan which appealed to all in this time of economical ressesion.

This is going to be the basis for a series of silk screen prints onto some paper i was given. The aim would be to have them ready for the show in July. I am now more focused on such things as the idea of variations in time etc to drive my work but also looking at this idea of abstraction.

I also placed the images onto a bus billboard to show the judges the variety in which the scheme could be used. I enjoyed doing this as it took me away from the rectangular shape which i was placing the visuals into originally.

I developed my original Pj smoothies ideas throughtout the prievious few months. I created fruit visuals from hand drawn sketches and put them into photoshop to colour and shade them. I also came up with a slogan for the advertising campaign, "Beat the crunch get a pj's smoothie" this refrenced the credit crunch and targeted people in hetic lifestyles which needed to get something quick helthy and cheap. which was what the brief suggested.

I placed my final images onto a billboard so that the judges fort he competition could see exactly what the scheme would look like.
